Products and Applications
Flame retardant is a special chemical additive that resists or inhibits the burning of flammable materials. It is widely used to increase the safety of many types of materials. Materials that have had a flame retardant applied can efficiently prevent, delay, or stop the spread of fire.
There are many kinds of flame retardants available, which can be classified as follows:
1. By the elements they use: halogenated fire retardants, nitrogen-containing fire retardants, phosphorous fire retardants, phosphorous and halogenated fire retardants, or phosphorous and nitrogen fire retardants.
2. According to their ingredients: fire retardants with inorganic salts, organic fire retardants, and compound-fire retardants.
Inorganic flame retardants are the most popular. The materials they use are aluminum hydrate, magnesium hydrate, mono-ammonium phosphate, di-ammonium phosphate, ammonium chloride, boric acid, etc. These inorganic fire retardants have the advantages of no toxicity, no smoke, and no halogens. The demand for inorganic flame retardants comprises the majority of the demand of all flame retardants.
Organic flame retardants mainly use organic phosphate and halogenated organic phosphate.
3. According to their method of application: there are two kinds of fire retardants, additive-type and reactive-type.
Additive-type fire retardants work by adding fire retardants to combustible materials, while reactive-type fire retardants improve the inherent flame-retardant properties of high-polymeric materials by adding a flame-retardant group. Additive-type flame retardants comprise the majority of flame retardants made (about 85%) and are widely used to prevent the spread of fire.
